The Four Noble Truths
- The truth of Dukkha
Dukkha is often translated as sufferings or unsatisfactoriness. There are three types of dukkha:
- Dukkha-dukkha
Ordinary dukkha of sickness, old age and death
- Viparinama-dukkha
Dukkha due to the impermanent nature of all things
- Samkhara-dukkha
Dukkha of conditioned states
- The truth of the cause of Dukkha - craving (tanha)
Tanha (craving or thirst) leads to clinging/grasping and attachment. There are four main attachments, i.e. attachment to:
- Sense pleasure
- Views and opinions
- Traditions and religious practices
- Self
- The truth of the cessation of Dukkha - Nibbana
Nibbana is one of the four ultimate realities. The Four Ultimate Realities are:
- Materiality
- Mental concomitants
- Consciousness
- Nibbana
- The truth of the path leading to the cessation of Dukkha - The Noble Eightfold Path
