Buddhism in a Nutshell
The Four Noble Truths

  1. The truth of Dukkha

Dukkha is often translated as sufferings or unsatisfactoriness. There are three types of dukkha:

    1. Dukkha-dukkha
Ordinary dukkha of sickness, old age and death
    2. Viparinama-dukkha
Dukkha due to the impermanent nature of all things
    3. Samkhara-dukkha
      Dukkha of conditioned states

  2. The truth of the cause of Dukkha - craving (tanha)

Tanha (craving or thirst) leads to clinging/grasping and attachment. There are four main attachments, i.e. attachment to:

    1. Sense pleasure
    2. Views and opinions
    3. Traditions and religious practices
    4. Self

  3. The truth of the cessation of Dukkha - Nibbana

Nibbana is one of the four ultimate realities. The Four Ultimate Realities are:

    1. Materiality
    2. Mental concomitants
    3. Consciousness
    4. Nibbana

  4. The truth of the path leading to the cessation of Dukkha - The Noble Eightfold Path
